What are Hero Quilts?

Burnsville honors its local heroes each year with an afternoon  of fun and celebration near July 4th.  The Town Square hosts exhibitors, musicians, and food vendors that include large wall of heroes with the photos and stories of veterans and local heroes. The Emergency Management Services, fire departments, teachers, police and sheriff’s departments are honored, in addition to veterans

The Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild presents quilts made by their members to local veterans.  Each of these quilts is individually made for that veteran and quilted by the local members of the guild.

The presentation of veteran’s quilts has taken place since 2013 and has grown each year.  This annual event truly shows how the people of Burnsville appreciate what the servants in their community do for them.  56 quilts were awarded in 2013.

Some words of appreciation from recipients:

 Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild

I was deeply honored to receive the lovely quilt made by your group on May 28, 2016. The program on the Burnsville Town Square was really impressive.
It has been over 33 years since I retired from the United States Army. This was the first time that I have been recognized by anyone for service to our country.Thank you for the beautiful quilt. I will cherish it and remember always the love that went into the construction of all the quilts given that day. Freedom is a precious gift. We must always remember FREEDOM IS NOT FREE   -Sincerely, Bernard

 With special thanks and appreciation for being so thoughtful Thank you so much for the quilt. You ladies are so considerate.    -God Bless, Phillip

How are Veterans Chosen?

Mountain Piecemakers honor veterans who reside in Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties of Western North Carolina. Priority is given to World War II and Korean veterans, then the guild awards as many quilts as possible within funding constraints.

Anyone may nominate a veteran using this Veteran Nomination Form. We need the veteran’s name, mailing address, phone number and type of service, such as Navy – Korean War.  Nominees will be added to our list and will be awarded a quilt as soon as possible. The deadline to submit a nomination is December of the previous year.

If a guild member wants to honor a veteran who is not on the list of nominees, the member should make the quilt and pay for the costs of the patriotic fabric, muslin, batting and quilting.  Be sure the committee has the veteran’s name, mailing address, phone number and type of service. The guild would be responsible for the cost of the label, mailing of letter, and any costs on the day of presentation
