Hero Day Hero Quilts Honoring Veterans. You can support our Hero Quilt Project by making an online donation (Mountain Piecemakers is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization) |
What are Hero Quilts? The Mountain Piecemakers Quilters create around fifty beautiful quilts every year to honor and express their gratitude to local veterans. The ceremony usually starts at noon on a Saturday that falls close to Veteran's Day, on the Burnsville Town Square during the Flags for Heroes celebration, which the Burnsville Rotary Club, Mountain Air, and other local businesses sponsor. You can check your local paper for possible celebration times changes. The quilters from the Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild make these quilts every year as a way of saying thank you to veterans from all branches of service. The guild has made and presented over 600 Hero quilts since 2013. Each veteran receives a quilt that is pieced and quilted, especially for them. Before the presentation each year, letters are mailed to the veterans who will be receiving quilts, inviting them and their families to the presentation. The Hero Quilts are a cherished gift for the veterans who receive them. They are a tangible reminder of the community's appreciation for their service and sacrifice. The quilts also provide comfort and warmth to the veterans, both physically and emotionally. This is the guild's and community's way of honoring local veterans and showing them how much we care. The quilters' dedication and craftsmanship are truly inspiring. Some words of appreciation from recipients: Piecemakers Quilt Guild Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild
With special thanks and appreciation for being so thoughtful Thank you so much for the quilt. You ladies are so considerate. -God Bless, Phillip Mountain Piecemakers honor veterans who reside in Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties of Western North Carolina. Priority is given to World War II and Korean veterans, then the guild awards as many quilts as possible within funding constraints. Anyone may nominate a veteran using this Veteran Nomination Form. We need the veteran’s name, mailing address, phone number and type of service, such as Navy – Korean War. Nominees will be added to our list and will be awarded a quilt as soon as possible. The deadline to submit a nomination is December of the previous year. If a guild member wants to honor a veteran who is not on the list of nominees, the member should make the quilt and pay for the costs of the patriotic fabric, muslin, batting and quilting. Be sure the committee has the veteran’s name, mailing address, phone number and type of service. The guild would be responsible for the cost of the label, mailing of letter, and any costs on the day of presentation Any money donated to the Hero Quilt project during the year allows us to honor more veterans the following year. Mountain Piecemakers budget for this project is determined each year based on the amount earned through the raffle of our opportunity quilt and our annual quilt show.
