Margaret is an artist, educator and quilt maker who lived 37 years on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. As founding Director of The Great Plains Art Institute at Sinte Gleska University, she studied the traditional art of the Lakota Sioux to make the degree program culturally relevant. As the wife of a tribal member, she learned the history, meaning and making of the “Plains Star Quilt” which continues to play a vital role in the culture. Her daughter, Jemma Moccasin, continues in this practice.

The presentation includes a brief history of the people, and how the Star Quilt has filled an important cultural niche. Many photographs display the quilts, their introduction to the culture and the ways the quilts were used to honor people.
